This recipe for homemade pumpkin spice is a slight variation on the classic pumpkin pie spice recipe. It’s warm, spicy, and oh so cozy. Make a big batch and keep it on hand for all your fall baking.

Imagine, if you will, you’re enjoying a nice cup of coffee while you look out your living room window. The rain is pattering on the roof, and there’s a crisp hint of a cool breeze. You pull your sweater closer around you and you breathe in the fresh aroma of pumpkin muffins wafting from the oven.

Can you smell it?

You know the nostalgic smell of pumpkin spice… the warm cinnamon mingling with the spicy spices of ginger and cloves. It’s the warmth that touches your heart as the weather outside dips to a crisp chill for a new fall season.

Whether you enjoy pumpkin spice just in the fall time of year, or if you enjoy it year-round (that’s me!) this recipe will keep you well-stocked on all things pumpkin spice!

Why would you bother making your own homemade spice blend rather than buying it from the grocery store?

I’m so glad you asked!

Store-bought pumpkin pie spice will be a great time saver, but will often contain anti sulfiting agents (a preservative).

Making a homemade version will take a little time upfront, but you can feel good about knowing what’s all in it!

Also, all these spices are very common spices which you probably already have on hand.

The first and most obvious ingredient in a homemade pumpkin pie spice blend is… cinnamon!

1/4 Cup of ground cinnamon is the base of this spice mixture. If you purchase cinnamon in bulk, you will save a lot of money. Cinnamon is great in so many things, we even like to put a few dashes in our chocolate chip cookies and pancakes. (It’s our secret ingredient!)

You can never have too much cinnamon on hand.

Next ingredient in our blend of spices is… dried ginger.

We all expect that warm hint of spice that comes only from ground ginger. 2 Tablespoons of ginger will give that perfect kick, but not be too overpowering. This is not a gingerbread spice mixture!

Our next spice is… nutmeg.

Nutmeg is such a wonderful, subtle spice. 2 teaspoons is perfect here. It’s wonderful in so many different applications (even savory), and is best when freshly ground.

Don’t worry, you can use pre-ground nutmeg and this recipe and it will still be wonderful. Fall is a busy season! Sometimes we need all the help we can get.

Next up in our list of individual spices for our mixture is… cloves.

Ground cloves are the coziest spice, giving a beautiful fullness of flavor to this spice mixture. 2 teaspoons of cloves is perfect. Again, if you grind it fresh it will be a more robust flavor, but using pre ground is totally fine as well.

Almost done…. next is allspice.

Allspice is a spice that pairs so perfectly with cloves. 1 tsp allspice is just the right amount.  Allspice happens to have many health benefits, including skin health! All the more reason to have a homemade pumpkin spice latte, right?

But wait, theres more!

Yes, this recipe calls for turmeric.

I promise I’m not crazy!

Turmeric doesn’t have a very strong flavor, which is great in this application. Here, we are just trying to get a hint of that beautiful bright color from turmeric.

We just want a little bit here, so a 1/4 teaspoon is sufficient. This will simply brighten up all of your pumpkin bread, pumpkin spice muffins, or pumpkin roll.

I still love to use some pumpkin puree in as many recipes as possible, but sometimes you just want to add a dash into your pancake mix and move on with the day.

The turmeric will be our little secret to get that bright fall hue in any recipe you add this homemade pumpkin spice blend into.

It’s going to be beautiful.

How about a little sugar?

I like to forego the brown sugar in this spice mixture, but if you’d like to add that in you can! I would use 2 Tablespoons if I wanted to add it in.

The reason for leaving it out, is so I can use maple syrup instead of sugar. Maple pumpkin cookies anyone?

Storage options

The best thing about making things from scratch, is we can make it how we like it best. If you add brown sugar, it will be even more important to store this in an airtight container so the brown sugar doesn’t clump up. A jar is wonderful.

Simply mix all the spices together in a small bowl and store in an airtight container at room temperature. I have a small jar that is our “pumpkin spice” jar. If you use a cute jar, you could leave it on the counter for a cute decoration all pumpkin season.

Fall season joy ♥️

Some of us get a little more excited about pumpkin spice season than others.

I hope this recipe brings you much joy as you create some beautiful fall memories with the ones you love.

Let me know how you like it!
