Better than movie theater popcorn!

For those times when you’re craving movie theater popcorn, but don’t want to go to the movies…. you make it at home!

This is our family favorite popcorn recipe for our movie nights, and we want to share it with you!

Good popcorn kernels

We like to purchase our organic popcorn in bulk to save a little bit of money in the long run. You can use any popcorn you like though.

Our favorite kernels are from Azure standard. We can get 5 pounds of popcorn kernels for less than one large popcorn at the theater.

*For the record, we love going to the theaters. It just can be difficult to make it work when you have nurslings or toddler in tow!

When making the popcorn, we typically use our “stir-crazy” but this recipe works just as well on the stove top. The butter gets a little browned when using the stove-top method and gives it a really nice toasty flavor.

Avocado oil

I started using avocado oil a few years ago with the belief that it will help balance my hormones. The whole family has enjoyed its buttery flavor and we now keep it on hand at all times.

If you don’t have avocado oil, you can use any oil you prefer. Just keep in mind, the oil you use will affect the flavor of the popcorn.

Grass-fed butter

Grass-fed butter is all the rage these days. And for good reason! It has health benefits that are fantastic, and tastes even better!

I’ve found that by adding the butter to the kernels as everything is heating up and popping, it soaks in nice and evenly. Plus, it’s one less step later!

Fine sea salt

The salt you use is really important here. Kosher salt is my favorite for most recipes, but in this case you need the finer texture of a fine sea salt. We want that salt to stick to every single piece of popcorn!

Saltless popcorn is one of the biggest disappointments in life.

As soon as the popcorn finishes popping, sprinkle the salt over it while it’s still warm. Use a big spoon and give it a good stir!

Serve in your favorite snack dishes or coffee mugs… Enjoy!

Notes

To pop on the stove top: Place oil, butter and kernels in a large pot. Cover with a metal bowl (as a makeshift lid) and turn heat to high. While wearing oven mitts, hold the bowl and pot and gently shake continuously as the popcorn pops. Once popcorn finishes popping, pour into the bowl and add salt. Enjoy!
